Tina Morlock is a published self-help author, novelist, and poet who freelances as a nonfiction developmental editor and managing editor with more than 20 years experience working with digital and print media.
Born into a family full of creative thinkers, artists, and poets, Tina has known since her teenage years that she was destined to become a writer. It started with fiction and poetry as a teenager, with her words giving her a therapeutic departure from her depression and teenage angst, then grew into something more once she started working on newspaper staffs, for literary journals, and, most recently, at publishing companies. Looking back now, she realizes how much strength the written word gave her. And, to this day, her siblings still tease her about her obsession with spelling and reading the dictionary.
Tina primarily works as a developmental editor, working with nonfiction authors to help polish their big-picture narratives. She loves this form of editing because it allows her to merge two sides of her brain she credits for her success—both the technical and creative sides. Along the way, she also discovered a love for working with beginning editors, helping them build their skills and working with them to ensure they deliver the best quality edits to their clients.

A memoir is a type of nonfiction book that tells a story about the author’s life, focusing on a specific amount of time. An autobiography, on the other hand, is typically an account that covers the span of a notable figure’s life.
I recommend exploring the different types of editing services authors will hire you for in the future. Of course, you can offer all levels of editing, but it’s likely your skills will favor one over the other. The smart move is to build the foundation of freelance book editing career on that strength.
Self-help books can create a two-way flow of communication that allows entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and create additional streams of income. That eventual book becomes infinitely easier to market when you start with your marketing strategy, then build the book from that.
